Pet Policy
Pets at Four Corners
Pets are family, and we get that. That's why they're welcome at Four Corners, whether you're moving in with one already or bringing one into the household further down the line. We just need to know a little about them, so take a couple of minutes to read our policy and if you’re bringing a pet with you or welcoming one as a current resident, fill in our Pet Request form at the bottom of this page.
Pets we're happy to welcome
Provided they're kept safely and well looked after, we're happy to welcome:
- Pets kept in a clean, safe and well-maintained home environment
- Well-behaved dogs, within any weight limit set out in your tenancy agreement
- Cats, provided litter trays are cleaned regularly and odours are kept under control
- Small pets such as rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, fish and similar companion animals, where they can be accommodated appropriately
- Small reptiles such as tortoises and geckos, housed in a suitable environment, in houses only
- Assistance animals, in line with applicable legislation and your tenancy agreement
- Pets registered with a veterinary practice and receiving appropriate care
If a license or permit is legally required for your pet, it's your responsibility to obtain and keep this up to date.
Pets we're not able to accommodate
- Dogs belonging to breeds prohibited under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991
- More pets than your home can reasonably accommodate, taking into account space and the welfare needs of the animals.
- Illegally imported animals, or animals kept in breach of wildlife, animal welfare, or import legislation
- Pets kept without a legally required license
- Pets that cause excessive noise, damage, fouling, odours, antisocial behaviour or nuisance to neighbours or the property
- Animals kept in conditions that compromise their health or welfare
How many pets your home can comfortably fit
We don't set a fixed number of pets you can have. Instead, in line with the Renters' Rights Act, we'll look at what's reasonable for the size and layout of your home, so your pets have enough space to stay healthy and happy in line with the Animal Welfare Act 2006, and so having them doesn't cause problems with space, cleanliness or your neighbours. We'll always assess your specific request on its own merits, on a case-by-case basis.
Small caged pets and fish, such as hamsters, guinea pigs or a fish tank, are usually considered separately, since they don't take up living space in the same way a cat or dog does.
We ask that you use a common-sense approach when considering the number of pets kept within your property. For example, a one-bedroom apartment would generally not be suitable for three dogs, and we would therefore ask that you limit this to one dog.
In contrast, a three- or four-bedroom house would generally be considered suitable for accommodating up to three dogs, provided there is sufficient space and the pets can be cared for appropriately.
Moving in with a pet
If you already share your home with a pet, just let us know using the form at the bottom of this page as part of your move-in. We just need a few details so we can keep a record of the pets that are living with you.
Getting a new pet while you're with us
Already living with us and thinking about getting a new pet? Just let us know using our Pet Request Form.
Here's what happens next:
- We'll let you know we've got your request, and might ask a few extra questions, like breed, size, or whether they're vaccinated
- We'll get back to you with a decision within 28 days (if we've asked for more info, this might add up to 7 extra days)
- If we do need to say no, we'll always tell you why, for example, if the type, size, or number of pets wouldn't quite work for your home, or it's a breed we're not able to accommodate
Looking after your pets, and your home
As a pet owner with us, we ask that you:
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness throughout the property
- Supervise your pets and make sure they don't damage the property
- Clean up after your pets promptly, including inside the property, your garden or front garden, and communal or public areas
- Provide suitable food, shelter, exercise and veterinary care
- Keep pets under control to prevent nuisance, excessive barking, aggressive behaviour, antisocial behaviour or disturbance to neighbours
- Cover the cost of repairing any damage caused by your pets, where required under your tenancy agreement, including any damage to garden turf
- Let us know if there's a significant change in the type or number of pets you keep, or if you'd like to bring in a different pet
Taking out pet damage insurance is entirely optional. If you'd like extra peace of mind, it's completely up to you whether you take out your own cover.
If something's not right
If this policy or your tenancy agreement isn't followed, we may ask you to put things right. In more serious cases, this could include removing the pet from the property, in line with the terms of your tenancy and the law.
If you think we've unreasonably refused a pet request, you can raise this through our complaints process at requests@fourcorners.com.
